New Mental Health Facility :: Lismore

The redevelopment of the New Psychiatric Unit at Lismore Base Hospital in Lismore, NSW, forms part of the New South Wales Government program to improve mental health service provision within the State, improving access to a wide range of facilities for the community.

The new Psychiatric Unit is the first stage of a three-stage masterplan upgrade to Lismore Base Hospital, which will develop the overall Hospital campus to enhance clinical, support and community facilities within the current Hospital site.

Lismore Base Hospital is the major acute care and referral hospital for the North Coast Area Health Service. The Hospital accommodates 210 inpatient beds and provides emergency care, critical care, general medical, surgical, paediatric, obstetric, mental health and clinical support services.

The proposed redevelopment of the New Psychiatric Unit will replace the existing 25 bed Richmond Clinic and will see the establishment of the following facilities:

• 40 Bed Adult Mental Health Inpatient Unit consisting of:
• 16 Bed Adult Sub Acute Unit
• 16 Bed Adult Acute Unit
• 8 Bed High Dependency Unit
• 8 Bed Child & Adolescent Inpatient Unit
• Ambulatory Care Unit for both Adult and Child & Adolescent patients
• Administration and Research Facilities
• Carparking and support facilities.

This new facility will result in the following benefits to the North Coast community:

• Facilitate the delivery of improved health, education, research and community facilities on the Hospital site.
• Provide improved access to and between different health and community services on site.
• Provide flexible building design to allow for future modification and expansion to meet anticipated growth in demand for services and changes in clinical practice.
• Develop a site strategy that will support the future development of the Lismore Base Hospital.
• Ensure the redevelopment provides harmony and balance with the surrounding areas.
• Provide a high quality urban environment through careful design of buildings and well planned public spaces.
• Improved carparking facilities & pedestrian and vehicular access to the Hospital campus.
• Rationalise the hospital campus through the removal of outdated or dysfunctional buildings as part of the site redevelopment.
